O-rings are precision-formed circular sealing elements. The most suitable application for an O-ring is static; for dynamic applications, certain restrictions apply which must be observed.

The groove size, and therefore the sealing pressure, depends on whether the O-ring is used in hydraulic or pneumatic systems. When selecting the groove width, care must be taken to ensure that it is wider than the deformed O-ring.
