SHAFT SEALS
Oil seals (shaft seals, Simmerring) are the most commonly used dynamic seals for rotating shafts. They consist of an elastomeric sealing lip, a metal reinforcement and a tension spring, which ensures constant contact pressure. They prevent the leakage of oil and lubricating fluids, as well as the ingress of contaminants from the surrounding environment.
What are shaft seals used for?
Sealing the shafts of gearboxes, engines, pumps, hydraulic units, compressors, vehicle gearboxes, agricultural machinery and kitchen appliances. You’ll find them wherever a rotating shaft comes into contact with a liquid or gas.
Types of oil seals in our range

How to choose the right oil seal
Three key dimensions: internal diameter (shaft, mm), external diameter (hole in housing, mm), width (mm). Select the sealing lip material according to the medium and temperature: NBR (-30 to +100 °C, oils and fuels), FPM/Viton (-20 to +200 °C, aggressive media), MVQ/silicone (-60 to +200 °C, foodstuffs), PTFE (extreme conditions).
Shaft requirements
The service life of the oil seal is largely determined by the mating surface of the shaft. The surface hardness at the sealing lip should be at least 45 HRC (preferably 60 HRC at circumferential speeds above 4 m/s or in dusty environments). The hardened layer resulting from hardening, case hardening or nitriding should be at least 0.3 mm thick. In corrosive environments, it is recommended that the shaft be hard chrome-plated and polished — with a chrome layer thickness of 0.02–0.1 mm. Materials with poor thermal conductivity and thin-walled tubes are not suitable for bearing housings.
Standards and marking
In Central Europe, oil seals are standardised in accordance with ČSN 02 9401, DIN 3760 and DIN 3761. The marking in the name indicates the dimensions and material — e.g. Gufero 35×50×10 NBR70 = internal diameter 35 mm × external diameter 50 mm × width 10 mm, material NBR, hardness 70 Shore A. Tighter tolerances can also be manufactured to specification on request.
